Kestrel — logo workshop 01
blue #1346D9 measured from inspo · type comp: Avenir Next (stand-in for a Styrene-class friendly grotesque)

The concept gift: a kestrel is the windhover — the only falcon that holds still in moving air, measuring, before it commits. Hover = measure, stoop = commit. Article IV as a bird.

Three models, one brief. Each round below shows its survivors AND its culls (dimmed, with reasons). To watch each model think — every version in write order — see the iteration record →

Round 1 · Claude Fable 5

A · Windhover

the hover before the stoop — motion held still; closest kin to inspo 1

B · Tail fan

KestrelStudios
24 px

kestrels fan their tails to hover; mid-century trademark energy (inspo 2)

C · Paper kestrel

KestrelStudios
24 px

cut-paper friendliness on the electric blue (inspo 3); tee-print native

D · K-bird badge

KestrelStudios

the monogram: falcon hiding in the K; doubles as app icon / favicon

Round 2 · Codex (gpt-5.6-sol ultra) — challenger

CX-A · codex-a

KestrelStudios
24 px

Pocket Kestrel — A compact side bird in four cut-paper shapes: long tail, dark folded wing, and blunt hooked beak.

CX-B · codex-b

KestrelStudios
24 px

Perched — A calm upright kestrel with a long tail and one folded wing, drawn like a small 1950s trademark.

CX-C · codex-c

Soft Pinion — One broad raised wing, swelling through the shoulder and opening into a shallow feather cleft.

Culled / superseded — kept visible, with reasons

Keen CULLED
a wing-shaped eye containing a round kestrel head
Open Talon CULLED
three talon-hooks around untouched ground (the 9th of 11 versions)
Stillpoint CULLED
a symmetric front-on spread-wing bird around one dark point

Round 3 · Opus 4.8 — challenger (bold-mass thesis; culled 4 → 2)

OP-A · opus-a

KestrelStudios

Keystone — a heavy friendly K — the upper arm a swept wing to a pointed tip, the lower a fanned tail; reads K first, kestrel second, and doubles as the app icon

OP-C · opus-c

KestrelStudios

Stoop — the dive as one bold symmetric mass — wings swept hard back, body driving to a point; the commit that follows the hover

Culled / superseded — kept visible, with reasons

Fixed Point CULLED
v1 — wispy strokes: the exact timidity the round set out to avoid
Kestrel (head) CULLED
cut after 3 tries — a profile falcon head kept misreading: chat bubble → rodent → fish. The malar-stripe idea was right; the silhouette wouldn't resolve. (Codex's front-face Cheekmarks nailed the same idea.)
The Measure CULLED
v1 — reverted to thread; read as a pool cue and ball
Windhover CULLED
v1 — a symmetric displayed bird that read as a palm frond / starburst, not a falcon
